A WØRD WITH

DION is from Tazzy.

He rips and has a lady in every city.

Taking off on a left watch your back.

The lizard goes fast.

And is changing free surfing faster than we can say

“Did he just land that?”

DION:

The first camera was an old digital hi8 camera that my Dad bought when we were kids, that's the first one I ever remember playing with.

You and Kai [Neville] are the dynamic duo when it comes to surf cinema and EpØkhe did you ever foresee bringing your work to the masses?

DION:

We started pretty much as a hobby, it was what we loved going down the beach and trying to catch glimpses of any of the WCT guys when they were in town and editing them into little movies. Had no idea it would snowball into each of us having a career in surf.

From surfing freezing Iceland to launching a new shoe in L.A. Where is one place you have to travel to before you die?

DION:

Right now all I want to do is stay still. I want a house and to relax and not travel. I've been travelling non stop since I was 17 so for me the most amazing place to travel is home.

There’s no doubt your work behind the lens catches the eye, so if you had access to any actor and an unlimited budget what would you create?

DION:

Ryan Gosling, make a cheesy rom-com and make billions the box office.

Back in February, you were smack in the middle of one of the biggest storms Mozambique's ever been through. Then you documented the damage it did to the people’s infrastructure and lives. How important is it you to promote awareness by turning that mess into a message?

DION:

It felt nice to be able to finally use social media for something good rather than what I ate for breakfast.

How many beanies do you have?

DION:

1.

You mentioned your Pops got you a board for Christmas instead of a sponge. Looking back, do you think now that was the gift of all time?

DION:

Pretty glad he did that… although I would probably know how to do backflips on the book by now though, that’d be sweet.

Nate, Chippa, and you just dropped OCTOPUS traction. What inspired you to get this idea into motion?

DION:

The need for good traction that wasn’t fluorescent colored.

The Middle East has a complicated reputation, so when you travelled with Joe G to Dubai to shoot ELECTRIC BLUE HEAVEN what was your current state of mind?

DION:

Dreamlike.

 What’s something that

most don’t know about Dion?

DION:

I like to be alone, and I don't like talking.

You keep making the loudest noise in the industry and continue to leave your mark on surfing for generations to come what’s in store for Dion in the next 32 years?

DION:

Relaxing in my cabin by the river in Tasmania and learning to fly fish and riding my 7’0 at the fat left point that's 10 mins down the road.

Huge thanks Dion for shaping the future of surfing.
